Meet the community hero who spreads joy in our community

Whilst out and about on foot patrol today, your local officer bumped into a very familiar face – Neil, affectionately known as South Derbyshire’s very own Bean Man.

Seeing Neil in his unmistakable full-body Heinz baked beans costume is guaranteed to bring a smile and today, (Saturday 12 September), was no different.

Bean Man and Officer Bob have been working alongside each other for years, joining forces to raise awareness and to collect essential items for local food banks and homeless shelters.

Neil brings so much joy wherever he goes, regularly completing four-hour shifts outside local food stores and on village greens, shaking his collection tin while raising awareness of food poverty.

Today, it was heart-warming to see so many residents waving and smiling at him from passing cars – with many parking up and walking back to gift tinned goods and other crucial items, which will all be donated to vulnerable people living locally.

Neil is a true credit to South Derbyshire, and his selfless work makes a real difference. 

And Mercia Safer Neighbourhood is proud of his contribution to our community.
